Summary

Experience the world of the Witcher like never before with this stunning deluxe hardcover edition of The Last Wish, the book that launched Andrzej Sapkowski's groundbreaking epic fantasy series, featuring seven gorgeous new illustrations by seven award-winning artists。

Geralt is a Witcher, a man whose magic powers, enhanced by long training and a mysterious elixir, have made him a brilliant fighter and a merciless hunter。

Yet he is no ordinary killer。 Both revered and hated, he seeks out the vile fiends that ravage the land and attack the innocent, holding the line against the monsters that plague the world。

But not everything monstrous-looking is evil; not everything fair is good 。 。 。 and in every fairy tale there is a grain of truth。

Andrzej Sapkowski’s The Last Wish introduced the world to the iconic monster hunter Geralt of Rivia; his beloved ward and the prophesied savior of the world, Ciri; and his ally and true love, the powerful sorceress Yennefer—and they took the world by storm。 Since its first publication in Poland almost three decades ago, The Witcher series has become a New York Times and international bestseller, has inspired a hit Netflix show and multiple blockbuster video games, and has transported millions of fans to an epic world of magic and adventure。

More than lives up to the hype。 Extremely enjoyable。

Didn't enjoy the writing, but i think it is mainly because of it being translated to englishI am kind of interested to see where the story will go from there though, but I don't see myself completing the story anytime soon Didn't enjoy the writing, but i think it is mainly because of it being translated to englishI am kind of interested to see where the story will go from there though, but I don't see myself completing the story anytime soon 。。。more

My son suggested I start reading this book after unsuccessfully watching the series on Netflix。 I could not follow or figure out what was going on watching it briefly for about a half hour。 It took me a few chapters to get into the book, but shortly realized what the adventures in each chapter were about。 I really enjoyed each chapter!

A collection of fantasy short stories following the titular witcher character。 I enjoyed the stories, almost all of which are subversions of classic fairy tales like Beauty and the Beast, Cinderella, and a genie with three wishes。 Intercut between each story is segments of another short story, adding a little more context to what’s happening。 The prose isn’t particularly stand out, but it does the trick。 I appreciate how the the author doesn’t spend much time on exposition to build the world but A collection of fantasy short stories following the titular witcher character。 I enjoyed the stories, almost all of which are subversions of classic fairy tales like Beauty and the Beast, Cinderella, and a genie with three wishes。 Intercut between each story is segments of another short story, adding a little more context to what’s happening。 The prose isn’t particularly stand out, but it does the trick。 I appreciate how the the author doesn’t spend much time on exposition to build the world but instead sprinkles it in through dialogue and action。 I think that’s handled well。 Some of the prose and characters are definitely retrograde, spewing sexist comments and views。 Even if a medieval-ish fantasy world has sexism, the way the author writes and talks about it is just off-putting in the modern era。 It feels less about the world and the struggles and more about his view in women, which i found off-putting。I like how recurring characters are introduced and the world is fleshed out with each subsequent story。 That’s handled well, and Dandelion is a welcome addition to balance out Geralt。 I’ve played a little of the three games, a couple hours each。 I haven’t seen the show。 I guess having spent a little time in the world helped me envision it while reading。 I wonder how it would read without any context like that。There’s clearly a large world here that’s only been touched on, which does intrigue me a bit, but I’m not 100% bought into the series like I was hoping I would be。 I know there’s another short story collection, so I think I’ll give that a try in a bit。 A little break would be nice between。 。。。more

Chapter 1 was a fantastic battle。 After that, felt like I was reliving a bunch of side quests from a video game。 Haven't played The Witcher game, or seen the Netflix series, for what that's worth。Each scene was engaging, but after 4 or 5 of them, they started to feel like repeats。 Chapter 1 was a fantastic battle。 After that, felt like I was reliving a bunch of side quests from a video game。 Haven't played The Witcher game, or seen the Netflix series, for what that's worth。Each scene was engaging, but after 4 or 5 of them, they started to feel like repeats。 。。。more

Painful reading。 This could be partly due to the English translation。 What CDPR did with so little simply amazes me: the storytelling in the game Witcher 3 is far, far superior to Sapkowski's blundering。 I started the second novel and decided it was not worth my time。 The only complement I can give him is he seems to have studied fencing and swordplay as he uses terms an instructor would。 Painful reading。 This could be partly due to the English translation。 What CDPR did with so little simply amazes me: the storytelling in the game Witcher 3 is far, far superior to Sapkowski's blundering。 I started the second novel and decided it was not worth my time。 The only complement I can give him is he seems to have studied fencing and swordplay as he uses terms an instructor would。 。。。more

Maybe 2。5 to be honest。 I wanted to read this series because I've heard good things about it, but if it didn't have the reputation carrying me though (to the potential of a better sequel perhaps?) I might've DNFed it。 It felt more like a D&D campaign than a book, with a main character who travels through a variety of combats, meets NPCs, etc。 I don't like fairy tale retellings in general, and the writing was kinda flat; maybe it suffered in translation。 At least it wasn't too long。 Maybe 2。5 to be honest。 I wanted to read this series because I've heard good things about it, but if it didn't have the reputation carrying me though (to the potential of a better sequel perhaps?) Andrzej Sapkowski has some of the prettiest writing I've ever had read。 The dialogue is always charming and witty and he's good at making his characters believable。 My biggest problem with this book is the pacing but that is personal preference。 This is a good introduction to his characters Geralt and his friends, I would definitely recommend reading this before getting into Blood of Elves。"Lesser, greater, middling, it's all the same。 Proportions are negotiated, boundaries blurred。 I'm not a pi Andrzej Sapkowski has some of the prettiest writing I've ever had read。 The dialogue is always charming and witty and he's good at making his characters believable。 My biggest problem with this book is the pacing but that is personal preference。 This is a good introduction to his characters Geralt and his friends, I would definitely recommend reading this before getting into Blood of Elves。"Lesser, greater, middling, it's all the same。 Proportions are negotiated, boundaries blurred。 I'm not a pious hermit, I haven't done only good in my life。 But if I'm to choose between one evil and another, then I prefer not to choose at all。"Andrzej Sapkowski, The Last Wish 。。。more

3。75 starsI watched season 1 of The Witcher and The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf on Netflix。 I don't know if I would have immediately liked this book without already having some connection to Geralt the Witcher。 This is several short stories。 None of them were amazing to me, but I'm definitely interested in reading more。 3。75 starsI watched season 1 of The Witcher and The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf on Netflix。 I don't know if I would have immediately liked this book without already having some connection to Geralt the Witcher。 This is several short stories。 None of them were amazing to me, but I'm definitely interested in reading more。 。。。more

The main idea of the book is that there is gay dragon whose last wish is to be f*cked from anus。 Not a nice book

Really enjoyed this set of short stories。 The writing is pretty great and the stories are smart, with interesting twists and intelligent characters。 The timeline is a bit squiggly, and it was kind of a game for me to look for clues and try to figure out what order the stories take place in。 In most of the stories Sapkowski takes themes from traditional fairy tales and subverts them。 Yes there is a Witcher, and yes he occasionally kills monsters, but that is not really the point。 (view spoiler)[I Really enjoyed this set of short stories。 The writing is pretty great and the stories are smart, with interesting twists and intelligent characters。 The timeline is a bit squiggly, and it was kind of a game for me to look for clues and try to figure out what order the stories take place in。 In most of the stories Sapkowski takes themes from traditional fairy tales and subverts them。 Yes there is a Witcher, and yes he occasionally kills monsters, but that is not really the point。 (view spoiler)[In fact, the Witcher often finds a way to save the monster, but kills plenty of humans in the process。 (hide spoiler)] If this were a children's book of fables, each story could easily end with the sentence "And the moral of the story is。。。"。 But here the author has left that exercise to the reader。 One point that seemed to be hammered home throughout is that Sapkowski finds humans far scarier than any monster ever could be。 。。。more

As with one or two other series, The Witcher has been an on and off want to read for a while now。 I know of the games and plan to watch the Netflix series, but I wanted to read the books。 So here I am, finally reading the series。 I'd say this book did a great job setting up what we can expect with the series。 Introducing our main character (Geralt), the reputation of witchers, Geralt especially, and had some pretty good action and world building。 I will be continuing on as this seems like a pret As with one or two other series, The Witcher has been an on and off want to read for a while now。 I know of the games and plan to watch the Netflix series, but I wanted to read the books。 So here I am, finally reading the series。 I'd say this book did a great job setting up what we can expect with the series。 Introducing our main character (Geralt), the reputation of witchers, Geralt especially, and had some pretty good action and world building。 I will be continuing on as this seems like a pretty good series。 。。。more

I thought the show must have butchered the book because it was so confusing and disjointed。 Nope, turns out the book is just as disorganized。 I was able to follow this somewhat because I watched the show, but I won't say it made the most sense。 The writing and stories are good so it's pretty fun as long as you look at it as a collection of short stores rather then a novel。 Some context hints of time and place would have been nice though。If you were a fan of the Decameron this might be up your al I thought the show must have butchered the book because it was so confusing and disjointed。 Nope, turns out the book is just as disorganized。 I was able to follow this somewhat because I watched the show, but I won't say it made the most sense。 The writing and stories are good so it's pretty fun as long as you look at it as a collection of short stores rather then a novel。 Some context hints of time and place would have been nice though。If you were a fan of the Decameron this might be up your ally 。。。more

World building is so good it makes you weep。 I have an extremely overactive imagination and I found myself dreaming about the Witcher world multiple times。 The author is so descriptive, but not the point where it’s tedious。 Amazing read。
